Swords? Masks? what is Fencing?

If you’ve never tried fencing before, perhaps you’re wondering what it’s all about. Some people might think of it as violent and dangerous. But modern fencing is not only fun and safe, it’s also a unique way to get fit and boost mental wellbeing.

Fencing is one of the five sports which have been permanent fixtures at the Olympic Games since the first modern games were held in 1896. In its simplest form, fencing is a sport where two athletes compete with swords, which are long, thin, bendy and made from maraging steel (a strong tough steel that’s often used in aircraft). The aim is to touch your opponent with your sword and prevent yourself from being touched.

A sport based on sword fighting, that combines the physical and mental strengths of each participant, not only do strenght, speed and coordination matter in fencing, but so do the planning, reflexes, quick-thinking and great mental strenght. A sport that needs specific skills, most important skills are balde skills, tactics and footwork.

There are three different weapons, each with their own rules and unique style.

  • Foil :
In foil, touches are scored with the tip of the blade. The target area is only the torso, marked by a silver electric vest  that registers when a touch is scored. Foil observes a set of rules called “right of way,” which determine who is awarded a point when both fencers touch. Foil is considered both the most elegant weapon and the middle ground between the other two.

  • Epee :
In epee, points are scored with the tip of the blade. The entire body is target area. Whoever touches first scores, and if fencers score simultaneously they both receive a point. Epee fencers are famous for their patience and thoughtful attacks.

  • Saber :
In saber, points are scored with the tip or the sides of the blade, and the target area is from the waist up. Saber fencers wear a long-sleeved lame to register touches electronically. Saber also observes right of way, and is known for its speed.

You can differentiate fencing weapons from its shape, tip, and even the grip of the sword.
